Little House in the Big Woods

I remember in the 4th grade I did a project on Little House In The Big Woods. My mom and worked very hard on my Little House diorama. We created a cabin, a backyard full of pine trees and each of the Ingalls. We wanted to create a realistic Wisconsin Cabin that was described in the book.

I really liked the book because it was so pure. There were no bad guys or huge conflicts, but there were plenty of fun prairie games and stories. It was fun to read about all the adventures Laura had with her family. To my eight-year-old self this book was amazing!

LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE

Ma’s Maple Candy Recipe

Supplies:

  • 2 cups pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • saucepan (non-stick works best)
  • candy thermometer recommended

Instructions:

1. Cook syrup over very low heat until it begins to boil, stirring frequently.

2. Continue boil until it reaches 233°F on the candy thermometer.

3. Remove from heat and cool for approximately 60-70 minutes, or until the temperature on the candy thermometer reads about 110°F

4. Add the vanilla extract and heat until smooth and fluffy.

5. Shape this mixture into small patties, or while still warm you can pour onto pans of clean snow as Laura did. If you have no snow, you can blend ice cubes until they are crushed, then place crushed cubes into a pan before pouring the maple candy. You can also use candy molds.

6. Maple candy must be stored in airtight containers to prevent the candy from drying out.

This website has a lots of fun Little House activities. Let me know if you have any fun Little House activities you like to do?

Melissa Gilbert as "Ma"

Did you Melissa Gilbert, the original Laura, is playing “Ma” in LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE The Musical? I remember watching her as the freckly faced Laura Ingall in the television series. It will be interesting to see Melissa Gilbert all grown up taking on this new role. The show will be in Tempe Dec. 8-13, 2009 at the ASU Gammage. I can't wait to see it!

The Christmas they never forgot

One of my favorite Christmas movies is LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE “The Christmas they never forgot.” My sister and I were given a copy of the movie on VHS when we were little girls, and we watched it over and over.

In the episode the family is stuck in a terrible snow storm, and they cannot leave the house. Instead of complaining about the weather they decide to share their favorite Christmas memories.

This movie always got my sister and me in the Christmas spirit. Do you have a favorite Little House Christmas story? Please share :-)

Little House on the Prairie

Little House on the Prairie has always been one of my family’s favorite stories. When I was younger I lived in Kansas just like Laura. I would beg my mom to check out all Laura Ingalls Wilder books from the library, and when the TV show was on my mom and I would sit and watch together. It was our special time.
This map shows the distance from my old house to Laura's Home town (Independence, KS)

I always identified with Laura because we both moved alot. She moved from settlement to settlement, and I moved from Army base to Army base. Moving was never easy for Laura, and it was definitely not easy for me. But just like Laura I had my family to get me through.

Eighteen years ago, I started reading the books and watching the TV show. Now I am a college student at Arizona State University. I hadn’t thought of Little House for awhile when one I heard that LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE The Musical was coming to Tempe.( Needless to say my inner child leaped for joy!) I decided that I might not be the only one who loved these stories when I was younger, and maybe if I were to Blog about my favorite memories fellow fans would share their memories as well.

Tell me about your favorite books, favorite episodes, favorite “Ma” recipes etc. I hope this blog helps you remember all the fun that Little House brings.
